About Ajmer

Ajmer at one time was the seat of power of the Chauhan Dynasty. It was from Ajmer that the last Hindu ruler of Delhi - Prithvi Raj Chauhan controlled a major part of Northern India.

Ajmer also served as the Imperial Capital under the Mmughal Emperor Jahangir.
Today Ajmer is more important as the final resting place of the great Sufi Saint -Khwaja Mohinuddin Chisti . Muslims from all over the world revere the Dargah Sharif where the Saint lies buried . The number of Visitors of all religions is high and reaches their peak at the time of Saints Ors or death anniversary, in October/ November.

Hindu mythology identifies Pushkar just 11 kms. from Ajmer across the Hills as the spot where a lotus flower dropped by Brahma the Creator fell on Earth. A gorgeous little Lake promptly sprung out of the Thar Desert. Pushkar has as many as 400 Temples and 52 Ghats and is the only Temple in India that is dedicated to Lord Brahma.

During the full Moon period of Kartika month (early/ mid November) tens of thousands of Worshipers come to bathe in Pushkar.
At the same time India's most colourful Cattle Fairs/ Camel Fairs/ Pushkar fairs is held.
This Cattle Fair is an unforgettable event - Camel rides, watching Sunset over sand dues shopping at colourful shops is a rare experience.
